Support

Helion Rift is a real time strategy game for Windows PC. This page covers fixing common problems, where the game keeps its files, how to report a bug, what your PC needs, and a few common questions. I am a solo developer, so the more detail you give me, the faster I can help.

Troubleshooting

Start here if something is not working. Each part below says what to try first.

The game will not start

Try these in order:

  • Check your PC against the system requirements below. The game needs Windows 11, 64-bit, and a graphics card that supports DirectX 11.
  • In Steam, verify the game files (see "Verify game files in Steam" below).
  • Restart your PC, then start the game again.
  • Update your graphics card driver from your graphics card maker.
  • If it still does not start, use the web report form and tell me your Windows version, your graphics card, and what you see (an error window, a black screen, or nothing at all). If the game started at least once, attach the Player.log file described in "Where your files and logs live" below.

The game runs slowly

Try these in order:

  • Open Settings and lower the Quality Preset. The presets are Very Low, Low, Medium, High, Very High and Ultra.
  • In Settings, lower Shadow Quality.
  • Close other programs that draw on the screen or use the graphics card, such as game overlays, screen recorders and browsers with many tabs.
  • Update your graphics card driver.
  • UI Scale (1.00 to 1.50 in Settings) changes how large the menus and HUD are. Change it if the interface feels too small or too large for your screen.
  • If it is still slow, send a bug report with the kind of problem set to Performance. The report includes how the game was running (frame times and unit counts), which helps me a lot.

I cannot connect to or join an online match

  • Online multiplayer needs an internet connection.
  • The game connects through Unity's relay service, so you should not need to open ports on your router.
  • Check that your firewall or antivirus is not blocking the game, and try again with a VPN turned off.
  • If it keeps failing, send a bug report right after it happens, with the kind of problem set to Multiplayer, and say whether you were hosting or joining. In a running match, press F11 to save a snapshot, then finish the report from the menu. If the game will not run at all, use the web report form.

Sound or display problems

  • No sound or wrong sound: check the volume settings in Settings, then check that Windows is using the output device you expect.
  • Menus or HUD too small, too large or cut off: change UI Scale in Settings (1.00 to 1.50).
  • Wrong picture or flicker: update your graphics card driver, then try a lower Quality Preset.
  • If none of that helps, send a bug report with the kind of problem set to Audio or Menus and screens. The screenshot in the report shows me what you see.

Where your files and logs live

The game keeps its files in one folder on your PC. Paste this into the address bar of Windows File Explorer:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\TokkeBe Games\Helion Rift
  • Player.log is the game log for your latest session, in that folder. If a bug report asks for a log, this is the file.
  • Replays is a folder in there with one file per match.
  • BugReports is a folder in there where SAVE REPORT puts the zip files it creates.

Verify game files in Steam

This checks the installed game against Steam's copy and repairs damaged or missing files.

  • Open your Steam Library.
  • Right click Helion Rift and choose Properties.
  • Open Installed Files.
  • Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.

Report a bug

If the game runs, press F11 in the game. That saves a snapshot on your PC. You can also use the REPORT A BUG button in the menus. You then write what went wrong and finish the report in a form inside the game.

Nothing leaves your PC until you click SEND REPORT. SAVE REPORT only keeps a zip file on your PC and sends nothing. There is no automatic sending.

If the game will not start, use the web report form instead. You can also post in the bug reports forum on the Helion Rift Discord.

What is in the report

  • A screenshot, if you keep it on
  • The game log, with your Windows user name and PC name removed
  • The replay of the match, if you keep it on. Player names are replaced by seat numbers.
  • Match details (map, factions, game time) and how the game ran (frame times, unit counts)
  • A short summary of your PC (Windows version, processor, graphics card, memory, screen size)
  • The map file, only if you tick it in the Map Editor
  • What you type in the form, exactly as you wrote it

Privacy

The game tries to remove chat messages, Commander Names, account IDs, join codes and IP addresses from the report. This is automatic but not perfect, so check the screenshot before you send and do not type anything private.
